Certificate of registration as a citizen of the European Union (also known as a “green card” or “EU NIE”)

Are you a European Union citizen and would like to start living or working in Spain for a period longer than 3 months?

The EU citizen registration certificate (CRUE) is a document that certifies the registration in the Central Register of Foreigners in Spain of EU citizens or citizens of European Economic Area countries who wish to reside in the country for more than three months.

What does it certify? Registration in the Central Register of Foreigners. The citizen’s legal residence in Spain. Access to public services, such as healthcare and education, and the possibility of working legally.

How do you obtain it?

Make an appointment: You must make an appointment at the immigration office or police station corresponding to your area of residence.

Submit documentation: You must present your identity document, passport and other documents depending on the reason for your stay (e.g. certificate of employment if you are employed, or proof of sufficient financial means if you are not working).

Obtaining the certificate: The certificate is issued during the application process. What does it contain? The green card contains information such as your name, nationality, address and Foreign Identification Number (NIE).

Validity and renewal:

Renewal: The initial certificate does not have an expiry date, but it is advisable to renew it in the event of a change of address or other relevant details.
